The year 2019 saw the iron and steel industry at the heart of global development. With lots of ups and downs, the year 2019 remained an eventful one and overall, the steel output and demand grew.

At the beginning of the year 2019, volatility surrounded the steel industry. The slowdown of the global economy led to a downfall for the overall steel demand. The major players in the domestic market witnessed a decline in their revenues and globally the steel demand continued to fall because of uncertainty, trade tensions, and geopolitical issues.

Even though the global and Indian steel industry isn’t experiencing a big boom, the future of the global steel pipe market looks bright. With an increasing demand for the steel pipes in the oil and gas, water and wastewater, power generation, and other industrial sectors, the international steel pipe market is anticipated to reach $68.4 billion by 2024 with a CAGR of 1.6% from 2019 to 2024.

When segmented on the basis of electric resistant welded and S&S (submerged arc welded and seamless), the ERW is expected to grow at 8-10% as opposed to 5-6% for S&S for the next 5 years. ERW owes this growth to the increased usage of these pipes for irrigation, infrastructure, water supply, and numerous other applications. Moreover, the execution of the recent city gas distribution (CGD) licenses will elevate the sales of ERW and S&S.   • Apollo Chaukhat: The campaign highlighted the importance of Apollo Chaukhat. It suggested how Apollo Chaukhat qualifies as the right choice because they are termite-resistant and provide the frames of the house with unmatched strength.
  • Apollo Signature: The campaign also focussed on Apollo Signature, the designer pipes that lend an aesthetic touch to homes and furniture. Moreover, they are highly resistant to rust, corrosion and are eco-friendly.
  • Apollo Steel Planks: As 2019 neared the end, Apollo Steel Planks were launched. The same enhanced the range of the products and offered the country a better alternative to wooden planks.

To take the brand as well as the country forward in more ways than one, APL Apollo associated with different types of sports’ teams to increase their awareness and aspire young citizens to inculcate sports in their everyday life. The same also helped in tapping into the fanbase of various sports. In Mar 2019, APL Apollo partnered with Delhi Capitals for the Indian Premier League because of the wide popularity of the game in India. As a part of team association, Delhi Capitals sported the brand’s logo on the back of the player’s jerseys. Just after two months of the IPL, the organization associated with the Haryana Steelers for Pro Kabaddi League, Season 7. The steel demand worldwide is expected to rise by 1.7% to 1.81 million tonnes in 2020 and the demand for steel tube products is expected to reach 195 MT. Steel Manufacturing Process & What Makes Good Quality Steel Stand Apart

An alloy of carbon and iron, steel is being widely used in the present day scenario. Various qualities like versatility, strength, and cost-effectiveness make it one of the most used metals in the contemporary world. However, the process of manufacturing steel runs much deeper than the finished product – it involves multiple steps and different methods make different grades of steel. The manufacturing process has significantly evolved over the years. However, it still employs the original Bessemer process to some extent, which uses oxygen to lower the carbon content in iron.

Let’s understand the manufacturing process in detail.

The definition of steel is ‘iron alloyed with carbon, usually less than 1%’. The carbon percentage varies from 0.25% to 1.5%.

The process to produce steel first requires the production of molten iron. The same is accomplished with the Blast furnace process. A furnace is an enclosed cylindrical structure that is used to heat materials to extreme temperatures.

The blast furnace is supplied with iron ore, coke (also known as crude iron – it is a grey and hard fuel manufactured by heating coal in the absence of air. It has high carbon content and a few impurities) and small quantities of fluxes (minerals like limestone which combines with impurities to form slag and separates from metal in the form of stony waste matter). The same results in the formation of molten pig iron, which is further required in the manufacturing of steel.

Passing oxygen through molten pig iron lowers the carbon content of the alloy and changes it into steel.

There a few properties which make good quality steel stand apart, like the following:-

1. They are corrosion resistant

Different types of steel have diverse levels of corrosion resistance. Some grades of austenitic stainless steel have great corrosion resistance because of the high amounts of chromium and molybdenum present in them. Also, apart from being resistant to rust, the various grades of quality steel guard against the corrosive effects of saltwater and chemical exposures.

2. They are heat treatable

Good quality steel is not affected when they are heat-treated and hence is widely used.

3. High strength

Good quality steel has high strength and hence is employed in various constructional purposes. The good quality steel has a strength ranging from 170 to 450 N/mm². The same makes them stand apart.

4. Cost-effectiveness

Along with all the above-mentioned properties, good quality steel also comes at a reasonable price, thus making it a preferred choice across industries.

However, the pinnacle of success that we have reached today is a result of our laborious past – spanning over three decades. The company was founded in 1986 by the late Mr. Sudesh Gupta named as Bihar Tubes Pvt. Limited. In the same year, we set up our first manufacturing unit in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh. In 1993, we listed ourselves as a public limited company, thus adding another feather in the cap. We also started manufacturing galvanised tubes in the same year. Between 1994 – 95, we commissioned a new galvanising plant and also received ISI certification. This was also a proud moment as we got listed on the stock exchanges. In 1995, we entered into the capital market by way of a public issue amounting to Rs 438 lakh.

In the next decade, we evolved further and took the company to new heights. We imported cutting edge technology from Kusakabe, Japan and installed it across all three of our mills. It was during this time that we diversified our manufacturing to include the production of structural pipes. As our determination for new and innovative products drove us to perform better, we soon became the pioneers in pre galvanized steel pipe manufacturing in India along with developing in-house hollow sections across a wide range of sizes. Between 2000 – 2002, we also commissioned a new tube mill and the modern Galium mill. It was during this period that we received the ISO 9001:2000 certification.

The period between 2007-2008 was also very significant for us as we expanded even further and acquired not one but two firms – Apollo Metalex Private Limited and Shri Lakshmi Metal Udyog Limited (Bangalore). In the following year, we commissioned a plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. It was also the year of our Greenfield venture with state-of-the-art mills. We also started several warehouses across India during this time.

Another significant development took place between 2011-12 as the name was changed to APL Apollo Tubes Limited. It was also during this time that we were awarded UL, CE, SGF France, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certifications. We also acquired Lloyds Line Pipes Limited Plant near Mumbai, thus continuing our expansion.

Between 2013-2015, we continued to grow with leaps and bounds and procured CRFH Coils from JSW Steel to expand our product range. At this time, we also started manufacturing door sections, window sections and railing tubes to add to our vast array of offerings. We became the first company in India to achieve the capacity of 1 MTPA in steel pipes. In 2016-17, we added prestigious achievements to our credit – established India’s first ever Direct Forming Technology line in Hosur, commissioned Greenfield facility at Raipur, Chhattisgarh also with Direct Forming Technology and were awarded patents for six product design types.

Our hard and quest for innovative products have made us one of the top five steel manufacturers in the world. Today we have 11 plants, 29 sales offices and 800 distributors. What is the difference between steel tubes and steel pipes?

Many people confuse steel pipes and steel tubes to be the same thing and often use them interchangeably. However, a steel pipe and a steel tube are different from each other in a lot of ways. Starting from the procedure with which they are manufactured to their usage and shape – there are a lot of things that differentiate them.

  • Thickness

    The thickness factor will easily help you comprehend the difference between a steel pipe and a steel tube. For a steel pipe, knowing the wall thickness or as it is called the “schedule thickness” is quite important as it defines its strength. Owing to their usage in gas and fluid transportation, it becomes necessary to know the inner diameter of the steel pipe that will determine their capacity. The thickness of a steel tube is measured in gauge if it’s thin and in fractions of an inch or millimeter if it’s thick.

  • Measurement

    The ways to measure these two are poles apart because of their usage. When it comes to pipes, the inner diameter is considered. The distance between the opposite points of the inner circle (the circle excluding the thickness) is called the inner diameter.     In comparison to the steel pipes, steel tubes have compacted manufacturing tolerance. The same ensures that they fit and perform efficiently.

  • Usage

    Because of their strength and compacted manufacturing tolerance, tubes are primarily employed in constructional purposes, engineering and automobile manufacturing. Whereas, the steel pipes are used as passageways for transmitting fluids and gases from one place to another.

  • Shape

    There is a difference in the shape of a steel pipe and tube. A steel tube is not necessarily always round. As they are employed for structural purposes, they can be square or rectangular as well. On the other hand, pipes always come in round shape. It’s quite tough to mould them. The steel pipes are pressure rated to keep the leakages at bay as they are used in transporting gases and liquids.

  • Production procedure

    The manufacturing process for both the steel pipes and steel tubes vary a lot. The steel pipes are of two types – welded or seamless. When raw steel is made into a pipe by stretching, a seamless pipe is formed and when the edges are forced together and sealed with a weld, welded pipe is formed. The process is easier and less time consuming as compared to the making of steel tubes. When it comes to steel tubes, a lot of processes, tests, inspections are performed during the production process.

  • Cost

    The production of steel tubes is lower as compared to steel pipes. Also, the manufacturing process of steel tubes has stricter requirements in terms of tolerances and inspections along with requiring more energy and labour. Hence, the price of steel tubes is higher than steel pipes.
